Sales of Mining Family Matters' survival guides – including the award-winning Survival Guide for Mining Families – have topped 150,000.
It's a huge milestone for the guides, which were launched in 2011 to provide professional advice and practical tips for keeping mining relationships healthy and families happy.
Mining Family Matters co-founder Alicia Ranford says the guides have been sold in every state and territory of Australia and as far afield as Canada, the UK, Indonesia and Peru. The guides have also been modified for workers and families in the US and Canada, where they are printed in English and French.
The original Survival Guide for Mining Families was so popular that it led to the generic Working Away guide (for workers in any industry) the Survival Guide for Families in Oil & Gas and the longer self-help book Mining Families Rock. All are available online at the Mining Family Matters shop.
The 32-page, A5 guides feature the most common issues raised by families in mining and resources. Much of the advice came about through questions put to Adelaide-based registered psychologist Angie Willcocks on the Mining Family Matters website www.miningfm.com.au. Chapters include:
- Helping kids to cope with FIFO
- Sharing time and avoiding conflict
- Dads and discipline
- Tackling loneliness when you’re apart
- Are you making excuses about sex?
Alicia says mining offers great benefits for families, but it can also put huge pressure on couples in terms of communication, intimacy and raising happy children.
"We still receive wonderful feedback about the guides because they help couples to realise they're not alone in doing it tough sometimes," Alicia says. "It's so great to know that our little guides have helped so many families."
Alicia says all relationships have their ups and downs, but the stresses are definitely heightened when one partner works away or you're relocated to a remote mining town.
"We wanted our guides to offer really practical advice – things that could be tried straight away to make life easier and relieve the pressure," she says.
"Never in our wildest dreams did we think we'd sell 150,000 copies. A big thank you to the many companies out there who have supported their workers and families by purchasing the guides."
