How to beat that pesky influenza bug

| Share

Get the flu last year? Then encourage your employees, family and friends to get a flu vaccination, and show a good example by getting one yourself.

Why? Did you know that influenza is easier to catch in crowded areas and confined spaces, such as at work, restaurants, pubs or in the home?

Getting vaccinated against the flu each year is a positive step in preventing the spread of flu around your home and workplace.

Vaccinations are even more important for people who are:

  • Health care workers
  • Travellers (ie FIFO workers)
  • Aged 65 years and over – encourage your parents and elderly relatives to look after themselves
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander aged over 50 years
  • Adults and children with any chronic diseases that affect heart and lungs
  • Children or teenagers from 6 months – 18 years who are on long-term aspirin therapy
  • Persons infected with HIV
  • Pregnant women who belong to the above groups

However, it is not just these 'at risk' groups who need to be cautious. Anyone over six months old who lives with any person from the above category should also get a flu vaccination.

What if I get the flu? If you do get the flu, make a diary note to get a flu vaccination next year. All you can do at this point is manage your flu symptoms by getting plenty of rest and fluids and eating a well balanced diet. You may need to see your doctor for medications to fight fever, headaches and other aches and pains.
